Funfilled Myrtle Beach Boardwalk

Did you know that Myrtle Beach SC is one of the most popular tourist destinations in the southeastern United States? While most people are attracted to the seemingly endless beaches, it is the Myrtle Beach Boardwalk with its breathtaking SkyWheel that completes the experience for vacationing families visiting the coast. Located in South Carolina, Myrtle Beach attracts more than 14 million visitors each year. With a tropical climate, the coastline around Myrtle Beach is perfect for tourism. Known as the Grand Strand, there are more than 60 miles of beach, which allows visitors plenty of room for sunbathing, water sports, deep sea fishing and so much more. While the beach itself is noteworthy, Myrtle Beach is gaining new acclaim with its boardwalk. The first boardwalk was built in the 1930s. Because this original boardwalk was only made of wood, it was soon upgraded to concrete. Plans to expand the boardwalk were derailed by World War II, and the structure was destroyed by a hurricane in 1954. It was not until 1999 that fresh renovation plans were drawn up, and the new boardwalk was completed in 2010. Although this boardwalk is relatively new, it is already regarded as one of the best. The boardwalk is 1.2 miles long, running along the coast with easy access to shopping and dining. There are numerous weekly attractions at the boardwalk, including festivals, concerts and more. The shining star of the boardwalk, though, is the SkyWheel, a 187-foot tall Ferris wheel. When it opened on May 2011 it was the second-tallest extant Ferris wheel in North America. The boardwalk is also home to the Pavilion, which is a family-oriented amusement park. The Pavilion was originally opened in 1948, allowing pay-per-ride fun for visitors. Although the original site closed, it has been relocated to the boardwalk. For more recreation options, Family Kingdom is located not far away. Family Kingdom is a seaside amusement park with 40 years of history. This amusement park has more than 40 rides for the whole family to enjoy while staying with Beachcomber Vacation Rentals in Myrtle Beach. Although modern travelers will find everything they want at Myrtle Beach, the area has a long history of popularity. In fact, Myrtle Beach's popularity made it the starting place of a dance revolution in the 1940s. With the vibrant atmosphere on the boardwalk in this time, shag dancing was invented at Myrtle Beach. Known widely today as the Carolina Shag, this dance is now recognized in professional dance competitions across the country.

The Origin of Valentine’s Day

Originally, Valentine’s Day was a formal Saints Day that was observed by the Catholic Church for St. Valentine, the patron saint of romantic causes. Valentine’s Day continues to be very popular across the world and is widely celebrated by couples, those looking for love, as well as children and friends.

St. Valentine was a priest who performed secret marriages during the 3rd century. During this time hundreds of thousands of men were enlisted in the Roman Army under the Emperor Claudis II. These soldiers were pressured to remain unmarried as this was thought to ensure their allegiance to the army. The priest helped people to marry in secret.

The priest was subsequently imprisoned and then executed. It was said that while in prison he gave a blind girl (the jailor’s daughter) back her eyesight. He sent her a note that said ‘from your Valentine’. This is thought to have been the origins of one of the most popular Valentine’s Day ideas — the Valentines card.

Today, many people celebrate the holiday in what has become a day to let people know that you like, love, or sometimes even, secretly admire them. Red roses top the list for a romantic Valentine’s Day gift ideas, followed up with a romantic dinner. Cards continue to be a tried and true way to share your feelings.
